Acne Terms…

Acne is a kind of catch-all term that basically refers to eruptions on the skin that are caused by the effects of hormones on sebaceous glands. Specifically, in the human body, there are pilosebaceous units (made up of a hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and a hair) everywhere except in the palms of the hands, the soles and the top of the feet, the lower lip; and anywhere there are pilosebaceous units, a pimple or a blackhead can develop.
There are more pilosebaceous units on the face, neck, chest, and back, so that’s where more pimples and blackheads develop.
The dictionary defines acne as: “an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands, characterized by comedones and pimples, esp. on the face, back, and chest, and, in severe cases, by cysts and nodules resulting in scarring.”
So let’s talk about the most common terms that you will hear when acne is being discussed and what those terms mean.

1.  Sebaceous glands: Sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum. These glands are where acne lesions appear on the skin. Sebaceous glands are attached to hair follicles.
2.  Sebum: Sebum is a substance produced by the sebaceous glands.
3.  Blackhead: A blackhead is an acne lesion that is not inflamed. It is filled only with excess oil and dead skin cells. Blackheads are also sometimes referred to as “open comedomes” because the surface of the skin is opened rather than closed.
4.  Hair Follicle: A hair follicle is a tiny shaft in the skin that a hair grows through. Sebum is excreted from sebaceous glands to the surface of the skin through a hair follicle.

5.  Whitehead: A whitehead is an acne lesion that forms when oil and skin cells block the opening of a hair follicle. Sometimes whiteheads are called “closed comedomes.”

Acne Potential Causes…

Acne solutions start with understanding what can cause acne.

What we need to understand is the many different factors that can cause Acne. While doing research I discovered important information and that is, NO one magic pill or product can permanently get rid of my acne . There are so many different aspects that can and will cause acne breakouts. Listed below are 7 factors that can be a contributor to acne breakouts.

Stress:

With all the stress facing people today because of our fast passed lifestyles, relationships, jobs/careers,social activities, family activities or any of the other social factors breakouts are possible. Clinically not tested by healthcare professionals. stress is still believed to be a potential cause.

Drugs:

Medications used in excess can cause changes in your bodies composition changing hormone levels and possible cause acne breakouts. Always consult with your physician if you have concerns about your medications.

Hormones:

Men and women have increases or decreases with regards to hormone levels especially while going through puberty. Hormone levels can fluxuate any time after puberty. The changes may or may not be dramatic but can be a contributing factor to acne breakouts because of the extra oils produced in your body. The extra oils is what bacteria thrive on. As you will discover when you do more research is, that bacteria causes acne. The extra oil produced when hormone levels change are a prime breading ground for the bacteria to flourish and cause acne breakouts.

Diet:

Allergies from foods in our diets can also be a cause of acne breakouts. This is completley dependent on your body chemistry and how it reacts to different foods. Foods in excess build up toxins in the body can cause many problems including possible acne breakouts.

Fungal causes:

Anti-fungal treatments can help people who have excess persperation due to work/athletic activities that cause you to sweat alot or individules with over active sweat glands. Pityrosporum is a fungus that breads in sweat and cause acne breakouts.

Halogens:

Products and/or medications where you ingest or are in contact with fluorides, iodides, chlorides or bromides have a chance to cause acne breakouts.

Genes:

Hereditary aspects of our genes passed down from generation
to generation are a contributing factor to why we have acne
breakouts.

Acne And Adults…

Are you kidding me! Pimples and wrinkles on the same face seem like a cruel and non-funny joke by good old Mother Nature. The old girl must have a mean streak though, because, sadly, pimples and wrinkles do happen on the same face more often than anybody realizes.  About 25% of men and about 50% of women will have acne at some time in their 20s, 30s, or 40s. Researchers believe that adult acne is basically caused by the same thing that causes teenage acne — hormonal changes. Often an adult that has an acne outbreak can visit their doctor and get a prescription for hormones that will clear the acne outbreak right up.

Diet doesn’t cause adult acne anymore than it causes teenage acne. However, just like teenage acne, the LACK of certain nutrients in the diet can contribute to the adult acne problem. This is why healthy life style is so important for people who suffer from acne breakouts.  Sometimes adults will have an acne outbreak after radical and prolonged change in diet and so they contribute the outbreak to something they ate. That isn’t what happened, though. The outbreak could have been caused by something that they DIDN’T eat, but it was not caused by something that they DID eat.

Stress is also considered one of the main contributors to outbreaks of adult acne. You can’t avoid stress altogether and live on planet earth. That isn’t possible. But you can learn to manage your stress and thereby help to control your acne outbreaks. There are all kinds of relaxation techniques that one can learn to practice;deep breathing exercises, yoga, etc.

The one thing that adults who suffer from acne breakout should remember is do NOT purchase products that are designed to treat teenage acne. These products are designed to dry the skin and, as an adult, you don’t want to use products that will dry your skin because that will cause increased wrinkling. The best thing to do is see your doctor. He can help.
